This morning, we went out to camp for the Sunday service.
Simon happily played in the bushes the entire service and Claire had one of her grand mal meltdowns for who knows why (did I mention she's a crazy toddler now?)
Trevor and I grew up as campers at Dallas Valley. We both played wide games with enthusiasm, rode horses and climbed high on the wall there. I have vague memories of a tall boy chasing me during Capture the Flag and giggling with him during a Drama skill. He remembers a very loud girl (who me?) who would tease him relentlessly. I have his phone number in one of my old journals.
Later, we worked on staff together. We have a collective memory of more wide games, drama skills and the chokecherry Olympics. (Later, we hung out in university, lost touch, got reacquainted and then fell in love).
Camp was the place I longed for every summer. It was the one place, growing up, that I felt totally free to be me: silly, ridiculous, clumsy and outdoorsy. I loved being a camper there but, even more so, I loved being a staff member.
Every Monday, new campers would roll in, spend the week challenging me and changing me and then, roll out on Sunday. Rinse, later and repeat for 8 weeks and camp life made me the person I am today. I loved the structure, the goofiness, the Christ-centeredness and the friendships that was my summer for 8 years.
It's weird going back now. I still know a lot of the staff. They're former students and campers and they've grown up so well. I still know the songs and the routines. However, my life has changed. I've grown up and moved on. I get sad about that. Sometimes I wish I could braid my hair, slip on some cut-offs and flip flops and go run around for a week or two.
In a few years, Claire and Simon will be ready to be staff kids and I'll braid my hair, stick on a bandana and head back to camp. I think I'll cook instead of counsel. I'll be in my late 30s by then and something tells me I won't be cool enough to be a counselor anymore.
Maybe, if I'm lucky, there will be a tall custodian who will chase me during Capture the Flag and give me his number. Maybe we can teach our kids the Chokecherry Olympics. (I'm always a sucker for a good camp romance.)

Toddler-hood
It's official. Claire is no longer a "baby". After having Shiya's sweet 5 month around the house for a while, I've realized that Claire is, at 20 months, a full-fledged toddler.
She has an ear infection. I took her to the doctor and then the pharmacist on Monday night. She was prescribed amoxycillian. This morning, she showed me her little chest and belly all covered in a rash. Just like me, she's allergic. Poor girl. She's been extra sad about life today.
I cleaned and put away our "baby" high chair today. Claire refuses to sit in it anymore. She wants to sit in just a booster like a big girl.
She wants me to unbuckle her from her car seat so that she can climb out like Simon. She freaks out when I "help". She wants to put her clothes on by herself and yells in frustration when her feet don't work in her shirt. She has to clean everything! She puts MegaBlocks away as Simon builds his towers. She's determined to drink without a lid. She wants to wear panties all the time and is pretty good at telling me when she needs to use the potty (yah!). She's become this fiercely independent little thing.
The thing is, I love it. However, it is soooooo frustrating. I love that she wants to do things herself and like a big girl. I love that she's so fiercely determined. I'm so proud of her. I know these qualities will serve her well. I need to remind myself to be patient with her as she learns and grows.
She's napping now. She needs a good snooze. Toddler-hood is rough.

Revolving Door
Remember how we just moved into our place? We're still super pumped!
One of the most attractive qualities of our new home (remember, I said "one" of - I'm very smitten with my house) is that we have a functional basement. It's nothing pretty; it's sprayfoamed and framed with rooms. This ALLOWS US TO HAVE COMPANY!
This week, we opened our home to our very first guests (my most wonderful best friend Shiya, her husband and their sweet, sweet baby boy). Yay us! We love having company and they are pretty easy company to have!
They leave on Thursday and one of my former Lanigan students shows up (for a wedding of another former student). She'll be here for the weekend. That will give us a quick breather and then, we're taking our little ones camping for the long weekend.
Eeek!
That's a lot on my plate. Pile on a specialist appt. for Simon, an ear infection for Claire, baby-sitting my favorite Zach kids and keeping up with summer playdates and some serious park time; I'm one busy Momma. I LOVE it!
I'm so thankful that I have a job where, for 2 months of the year, I can do all the hosting, playing, adventuring and house-wifing that I want. I need to keep soaking this happy busy-ness in because, it's fleeting.

Lately
Here's some pics of our life lately. Nothing really of the house. It's still in a state of disarray - I expect it'll be this way for a while.

Finally - Someday!
We're in!
On Monday, we had 11 wonderful men unload our trailer in 1 hour and 15 minutes. AMAZING!!! My Mom and wonderful sister-in-law lined our shelves. We dropped the kids off at the baby-sitter and went hard the next day figuring out where the heck to put all our stuff. We slept in the house with the kids on Tuesday. Wednesday morning, we sent the kids back to the baby-sitter and organized/assembled some more.
Now, we're sorting and assembling while playing and checking out all the parks in our new neighbourhood (found 3 so far - another one's being built).
Trevor heads back to work tomorrow and the kids and I return to our regular summer stuff (play dates and parks). We still have a pile of boxes to go through but, we've got most stuff in new homes.
I feel like we live in our own little resort. I keep pinching myself and gleefully giggling. I never want to move from here!
Today's our 6th anniversary. This house is a pretty good gift that we gave each other.

Summer pics
We've been on summer holidays for almost a week.
Every morning, I wake up my little ones and we snuggle in bed together and plan our day. With the Big Move happening next week, I've been trying to pack our week full of great adventures. We've been to the Splash Park, Wascana for Canada Day, the beach, a bus trip to the downtown library, Nana's farm, Auntie Karri's farm, our old park and a pile of other crazy little places. It's been a blast! I love my job but, I love hanging out with my kids even more!!!
Here are a few pics of our start of summer adventures.
Splash Park fun - a little face paint.
Celebrating Simon's Day - ooops, I meant Canada Day.
Waiting for the bus.
Farm cousins.
Look what Grandma and Grandpa taught him (on Daddy's old trike).
Hope you're having a fun summer too!

Transition
We've almost completed our "transition time" (read homelessness). Now that we're approaching the end, I can say that it's been good. We've successfully lived inter-generationally with Trevor's parents.
On the building side of things, it'll be good to be done. I've enjoyed the process of making decisions and picking my finishes. I have not enjoyed the poor customer service from my builder and the delays. I know that the finished product will be amazing and that, in six months, all those things I've been irritated about will be long gone.
We move in next week. It'll be good to have our own space. It'll be good to turn our "Someday House" into to our "Always House".

Today
Today, I celebrate my beautiful grades 6/7 students. I am continually blown away by their sweetness, their energy, their giggles, their stories and their spunk. I am so hoping that they wind up in one of my high school classes in a few years. I would love to teach them again!
Today, I eagerly anticipate summer. One more (full) day and then, I am a full-time Momma for the summer. I am ready to snuggle more in the morning and have adventures with my babies. Play dates are welcome - if you want to hang out, I'm excited to do that! This is our first no morning-nap summer in a while and I am pumped!
Today marks our one-month anniversary of being "homeless". I am still very, very thankful to my in-laws for allowing us to "holiday" here. I am also crossing my fingers and toes for an accurate possession date.
Today, I will go to my staff party and awkwardly mingle with my co-workers. I suck at this! I work with fabulous, kind and caring people. It's not them - it's me. My introvert side takes over at staff parties and I spend most of the time feeling like a deer caught in the headlights.

A Compromise
Last month, I made a choice about working part-time. I felt like I was settling for a not-so-great job (pushing the Core French cart) in order to make a good choice for my family. I felt really good about the family part but, let's be honest, I was doing a lot of positive self-talk to motivate myself about next year. I'm a really positive person and I know that attitude is everything. However, having to constantly "look for the good" and "get excited for change" was starting to wear on me. (Besides, I kept having a recurring nightmare about Middle Years children, French verbs and me trying to sing in French with them).
Another opportunity to go back to my old high school arose. Subjects I know and love. This job, however was full-time for the first semester and part time for the second semester. After a lot of thought, I realized that this might be the compromise I need. It's full time but, not forever. I think I can manage that.
Today, I said yes to that compromise.

30-Something
I turned 33 this past week.
Trevor turned 32 this past week.
My lovely niece turned 3 this past week.
We celebrated it all last night.
I remember a show on TV called 30-Something when I was a kid. I have no idea what it was about except that I wasn't allowed to watch it.
Now, I'm imagining it was about getting excited about socks for your B-day, having a kid puke up all his sushi on your B-day (at the inlaws place - in the spare room), waking up every night with an hysterical 3 year old, losing an earring (diamond - sigh) in the grass while "wrestling" a one-year old and Zumba fitness. Yep - this decade is shaping up to be completely different from the decade of bliss that my 20s was!
:)
Actually, this is exactly where I want to be in life. This is a good thing because, I can see things carrying on this way for quite a while.
(15 work days left until summer - I can HARDLY wait!!!)

Life in Transition

Simon - "Mom, I don't want to sleep in this room anymore."
Simon - "I am sad about missing my ____ Street house."
Simon - "When do I get my new room? I would like it to have dinosaurs."
Simon - "Why are we moving?"
Simon - "Where is our box trailer? Who is with my toys?"
Simon - "When will I see S_____ (neighbour) and talk at the fence again?"
Simon - "Does my new house have tulips? I would like a tulip."
This is Simon's perspective of our temporary life in transition. Claire is a little more clingy and a little more demanding. I am trying hard to keep their routines and the food the same. I am trying to snuggle them more and reassure them the best I can.
I have very similar questions, Simon. I feel a little like a fish out of water without my own "home".

M.I.A.
We took Fergus out to the farm. A frightened cat and two toddlers strapped into car seats is not a good mix. We had an interesting 1/2 hour journey out. :)
We explained to the kids that this was Fergus' new home. We kissed and cuddled and petted that little dude so much that day, I'm sure that being placed into a quiet garage was a relief.
Fergus' new home was where I grew up. He'd be well-cared for by my parents, fed well, sheltered and given free range of the farm + all the mice he wanted to chase and eat.
My Mom gave up parking in the garage for a week to "acclimatize" him to his home. We came out later in the week to let him outside for the first time. After a good romp, I put him back in before we left.
My Mom was carrying in groceries when the wee beastie scampered out the garage. She left him for a bit and then, when she called him, he didn't come. Figuring he was enjoying his new-found freedom, my Mom didn't worry too much. Later that night, she tried calling him again. Worried, she left the garage door partly up (which let in a nasty tom-cat who beat up my parents' other sweet cat). To no avail, Fergus has not been seen since.
I am heart-sick. I know that he is just a cat but, he's my cat. I love that little guy. He drove me up the wall but, he slept at my feet, left my children alone and loved me. He napped with me during the crazy baby days and kept small rodents at bay.
All I can think about is him wandering, hungry, scared and homeless. My poor little cat.
I hope he makes his way back to the farm.
I hope one of my Mom's neighbours sees him and calls her.
I hope he gets picked up by the animal shelter and we get a call.
I hope he eventually makes his way back to our old neighbourhood and that our neighbours recognize him and call us.
I hope I get to see his furry face again.

A Choice...
In the midst of packing up our entire house last week, I finally got the call about the transfer I'd been wanting back to high school. The gig I have now is fun but, not at all what I want to be doing. I was offered a one year job at my old school. No guarantees to stay the next year. It was for teaching subjects I'm familiar and that I miss. The only catch was that it was only being offered as full-time.
After a walk the park with my sweet babies, I decided to say "no" to a full-time job doing what I love to settle for a job that's okay. Don't get me wrong, my students are FABULOUS; I just miss the rigor of upper level thinking.
This is my season to be a Momma. I had a lovely season of surly teenagers, busy extra-curr and marking until the wee hours. Now, I get to snuggle my sweeties, play important little games and go about the business of looking after the practical needs of our home. I am one fortunate soul! Eventually, I'll find my way back to full-time life in the classroom. Until then, I'll be rocking my babies because babies don't keep!

This Old House
Six years ago, we moved into this cute little bungalow and made it our own.
I learned about flowers and compost and painting and cleaning.
Trevor learned to drywall, build a porch, rip up carpet and clean gutters.
We became happy home owners here.
Fergus came into our lives and ate our baseboards and snuggled at my feet every night.
We brought home our sweet, sleepless little Simon.
We spent many nights pacing the hardwood and bouncing in the bathroom.
We brought home our sleepy, silly little Claire.
We hosted friends, neighbours, parties, play dates, birthdays, daycare, dedication days, game nights and wedding showers.
We danced with each other and with our babies in the living room.
I baked my heart out in my little alley kitchen.
I marked over a thousand assignments here.
This old house has allowed us a home in which to live life to the fullest, and we have!
Tomorrow, we move out.
We're a family in transition. Our "Someday House" is still for someday... whenever the builder finally gets it done (mid-June, fingers crossed). We'll be at Trevor's parents' place until then. It's kind of home. We're telling the kids it's a holiday at Grandma and Grandpa's.

Loss of Innocence
S - My Sore Throat Microbe is a bad guy, Momma.
Me - Really, why?
S - He makes people hurted.
Me - Oh? Where?
S - Here (indicates throat). It's not nice.
Me - Sore Throats do hurt.
S - I can pet this guy, but I don't put him inside me.
Me - That's a good idea.
S - If I putted him inside me, I'd be hurted.
Me - True.
Poor Simon, it's hard to realize that the toy microbes he plays with are "bad guys". He's become my little philosopher lately. So many questions and so many ideas. It's fun to watch his mind at work. (I'm also praying for patience as I answer "Momma, what is that?" for the millionth time today.)
S - Why do we play?
S - Why do we whisper when that man is talking to Jesus?
S - Why are we moving?
S - Why is Claire my sister?
S - Why did I have to have a Time Out?
S - Why are we eating this for supper?
S - Why is that dandelion white?
S - Why is Fergus a cat?
S - Why is today a holiday?
Me - Really, why?

Boxed Up
Our move to our "Someday House" is becoming a fast reality. We move out of our little bungalow on May 26th. This gives us time to clean up and have things settled for the new owner to take possession at the beginning of June.
We get possession of our "Someday House" on June 16th.
Hmmm... those dates sure don't line up, do they?
Our builder has arranged to store our stuff in a secure lot in a storage trailer for our "homeless days". We plan on moving in with family for a short holiday.
Currently, my house is beginning to look like a collection of box piles. (Mostly liquor boxes, which I find deeply amusing!)
It's on odd feeling to pack the tangibles of my life away. I know that it's just stuff but, it's my stuff.
It'll be good to be in our new house. I guess I should begin to embrace the unsettled feeling that will be my life for the next month.

My Momma
Dear Mom,
Thanks for being such a great Mom. Growing up, I didn't know how good I had it. Homemade cookies, hand-packed lunches, fresh laundry, a gleaming house, lots of space for my friends to come and hang out and, best of all, someone who was always there to listen.
Being a stay-at-home Mom in the middle of nowhere with an out-of-town husband was a huge challenge. I whine when I have to put the kids to bed once a week... not all the time. I'm sure we drove you bananas most days. I don't ever remember you taking that out on us. You always played and made sure that we felt important in your life.
Now, you're one of my best friends. You're the only person (besides Shiya or Claire) that I actually like shopping with. You're the first person I want to call when one of the kids does or says something wonderful (or ridiculous). I miss you when you're away.
Thanks so much for being an amazing mother and an amazing friend. I hope that I can be as good of a Mom to Simon and Claire as you were to Tim and I.
I love you! Happy Mother's Day!

DNA for b-day craziness???
These days, it isn't hard to find an article or a TV show about scientists discovering a new gene for just about any and every behavior.
I want to know what gene makes mothers go a little crazy about birthdays? Seriously, what, in the evolutionary process (mirco-evolution, folks, I'm a creationist) makes mothers spend hours and hours and hours decorating cakes, shopping for and wrapping the "right" gifts, making elaborate invitations and decorations, cooking large meals, blowing up zillions of balloons and having huge parties for their children. Just look up birthday party ideas on Pinterest for a sampling of Mommies gone crazy.
We celebrated Simon's 3rd B-day and I spent hours on his party. I LOVED it! It gave me such great joy to see his little face light up when he saw his balloons, his bug cupcakes, his cool presents and all his favorite people gathered together. I don't know who was more excited, me or him. He's only 3, will he remember it all? Probably not. However, I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
I wonder what is in my DNA that makes me do this and gives me so much pleasure for it?
Yep, I'm weird. Maybe I've got the excitable Momma gene... sigh.
Thanks for the cool ideas, Hello, Cupcake!

Three
Happy Birthday to my sweet and precious little man. (Today, you wanted to be referred to as "Sore Throat". You also enjoy being called "Little Bat", "Ladybug", "Pancake", "Nemo", "Captain Canada", "Momma's Sunshine", "Zoom Zoom" and the list goes on as far and wide as your imagination.)
You are such an adventurous and intelligent little man. Yesterday, we discussed bats and echolocation. Today, we found Regina on your new globe. You love politics and trying out big words. You love dinosaurs, bats, bugs, Canada, stickers and cars. You're hysterical! You're already tell me the best jokes!
I'm so fascinated by the breadth and depth of your interests. I have a feeling you're going to become one very interesting little boy!
We celebrated 3 by having seeing all your favorite people at the same time. We ate yummy BUG cupcakes and we opened loads of presents (you are a spoiled boy). You laughed and cried as you were overwhelmed by the excitement of it all.
Being 3 opens so many new doors to you. Some will be scary as you try new things. Some will be exciting and fun. I promise that Momma and Daddy will stand by you as you try your wings and test your limits. We'll hold you close when you need it and we'll also give you a little push when you need it.
We are so proud of you. You are a delight! I'm so excited to hang out with my three-year-old!

Motivation
Once upon a time, I ran 1/2 marathons, I climbed mountains, I did sit-ups and work out videos. 2 babies later, I have excess flab, little time and very little motivation. However, spring is in the air and my BOB is a great walking buddy.
I'm lacking a little motivation and am begging for encouragement. How did you get back into the fitness thing post-baby? Know a great Zumba class or Boot Camp in my neck of the woods you can lure me to?
I'm off to strap on my beat up runners and slog/walk the lake.
It's a start, right?

Weaned!
It may be a little TMI for you but, Claire is officially weaned and I am FREE! 16 1/2 months and I convinced her that a morning song, snuggle and bottle was much more fun.
I got pregnant with Simon in 2008 and had him in 2009. I was pregnant with Claire when he was weaned at 13 months. She was born in 2010. Now, in 2012, my body is completely my own again!
She turned 17 months yesterday - crazy!

Pukesville

Today is Day #3 of Pukesville at our house.
We awoke to an atrocious smell in Claire's room on Monday morning. Poor sweetie had puked in her sleep, rolled in it and slept until 8:30. We spent the day snuggling and trying to get her to keep something down. Simon was an extra kind brother. He rubbed her back, brought her stories and sang "Soft Kitty" to her.
Monday night was filled with the many, many puke episodes of Simon. We used up our collection of baby blankets and pillows. Poor Tigger took the brunt of it. Tuesday morning was filled with laundry and a PBS marathon.
The kids seemed to perk up after their naps. They drank a lot of Pedialite and kept down some solids.
We had a good night. (Kind of - Simon was awake for a lot of it because he'd slept too much during the day).
This morning, we awoke to many more puking episodes and we're working at keeping things down again. We're having our second PBS marathon. I took them for a walk and we sat on a blanket in the sun. Then, they puked some more, so we retreated to the safety of our leather couch (so easy to clean). There's Jello setting in my fridge for lunch. Nap time is coming soon.
Can we get better soon? I'd like to spend my Easter holidays doing something a little more exciting then snuggling, doing laundry and watching TV (although, the snuggling is nice).

Easter x 2
This year, we celebrated Easter 2 weeks in a row.
We had a fabulous Easter celebration with my family that involved yummy food, fluffy dresses and an Easter egg hunt organized by my sweet sister-in-law.
This past weekend, we trekked east to visit Trevor's Winnipeg relatives. Highlights of this trip include playing Aunts, Uncles and cousins, visiting Oma and Opa, two "cousin parties", a visit to the Children's Museum and the Forks and awesome little car travelers.
Unfortunately, we brought a Manitoban flu bug back with us. Not the best Easter treat for my sweet kids.

Conference, Schmonference
Hello, welcome to our class. Oh, you must be "so and so's" parents. Good to meet you. Did you bring her report card. Excellent.

I like meeting the parents of my students. This year, I happen to love most of my students so, I have nothing but good things to say. However, 4 hours on a Monday night and then 4 hours on a Wednesday night make this girl very, very tired.
Note - getting a "B" is not the end of the world. "Cs get degrees", folks. Most children do not deserve A+s all the time. (Just like every performance does not deserve a standing ovation!) Sigh...

Muddy fingers

The season has turned. My kids have been set free. Every day, when I get back from work, I scoop them up and I can smell the sunshine and outside air in their hair. They smell so fresh!
I love that our sidewalk is covered in toddler scribbles, the knees of their jeans are caked in mud, their fingernails are dirty and their cheeks are rosy. I love that their toy mess is now outside. I love that they fall into bed and sleep so hard.
Welcome spring!

A Cat-astrophic Decision
We adopted Fergus almost 5 years ago. I think he's been a delightful little man. However, he has also been a crazy little tyrant. He's an alpha male so, he thinks he should be in charge and he's not afraid of letting people know this. Most times, he kowtows to me because I like it when he sleeps at my feet and he knows that it's me who feeds him.
Owning a cat has had it's frustrations. When left alone too often or kept inside too much (read cold, cold winters), Fergus takes out his pent up energy on our baseboards. We have chew marks along most of them. Also, he likes to jump as high as he can to catch the reflection of lights that shine on our walls whenever a car drives by. This has led to surprisingly high scratch marks on our walls. Our love seat is currently in the repair shop for some basic warranty work and we figured that, since it was in there, we'd get it the leather fixed. Good old Fergus happens to scratch it with his back claws whenever he jumps up to see out the window and our loveseat is a mess.
Unfortunately, small children and a grumpy, alpha male cat are not the best mix in an 1100 sq ft house. My own kids are pretty good at reading Fergus and his moods. Fergus also knows them and can predict them. Other people's kids are not so good for Fergus. Most of them want to touch him (he's really beautiful - and fluffy). They chase him and reach their hands out to him and try to touch him. If he can hide or if I can catch him and put him outside or shoo him to the basement, things are okay. If a kid corners him, he hisses and bats at them. This action sends most small children into hysterics and puts most visiting Mommas into Momma-Bear mode. I'm usually left defending Fergus or, after calming him down, putting him outside or shooing him to the basement.
I won't even begin to lament about cat hair... oh wait, I did that here.
When we move to our Someday House, we have an option to let Fergus move to my parents' farm. He'll be able to roam the countryside and have a nice, heated garage to take shelter in. I'm sure he'll catch his share of mice and birds and romp to his little heart's content. We're probably going to take them up on this option. My little gangsta is going to be movin' to the country.
It makes sense.
However, I'm really sad about it. As much of a pain as he is, I'm going to miss my little fur ball.

Dear Miss I.

Today, I went to another annual Teacher Convention. As much as I enjoy hanging out with my colleagues all day, I usually find myself planning lessons in my head and missing my students. It's always a good reminder that the classroom is where I'm happiest on a work day.
I've been out of university for almost 10 years. !0 years ago, I had my 12-person panel interview at Lanigan and GOT THE JOB! :) It was the best place for me to be a new teacher. Looking back, I was loved, mentored and put through my paces.
In the ensuing 10 years, I have learned a lot of things about teaching. If I could go back in time, or send myself a message from the future (holograph, of course), this are a few of things I wish I could say to a very keen Miss I.
-Go home! Stop fretting over lesson planning until 7:30 at night. The students certainly don't care this much.
-Stop giving so many marked assignments. Marking all evening after working well into the supper hour is not good.
-Get to know your colleagues better (I can still heed this advice - I'm terribly ant-social).
-Personal life should ALWAYS come before professional life.
-Don't take teenagers to Europe!
-Don't take 41 students to the PA Penitentiary on your own.
-Love those RISK kids more... you'll spend the rest of your career missing them.
-Laugh every day with students. (Silently fart near the ones who bug you and give them a dirty look shortly afterwards).
-Teach all those kids, not just the highly motivated ones. Regular teachers only really gear their plans for the "smart" kids. Good teachers focus on all of the students. (The reward for teaching the stragglers is much, much higher!)
-Read during Silent Reading.
-Don't read every email from admin - those articles are a time-suck.
-Change, even when it sucks and is unwanted, is still good.
-You're going to miss being Miss I.

Arena Bound

I read The Hunger Games series after Christmas break. Every time I stuck my nose into the books, it felt like I was submerged under water and I could barely breathe until I had to break the surface back into my reality. It was that intense, folks. If you haven't read it yet, where have you been? under a rock?
Normally, I would read the series and be done. However, I teach Middle Years now. I have built this elaborate community of readers (my students ROCK) and they watched me read The Hunger Games series during our Silent Reading time (any teacher who doesn't read during Silent Reading is missing one of my favorite parts of the day - yes, I am modelling and yes, I am reading for my own pleasure - it's awesome). I have Book Talked the series with every kid that has read it in my room. We have had the best discussions about love, family, the Roman Empire, government, power and sacrifice. Even better, all these conversations have been student led and we've been equal participants. (The girls and I have held lengthy debates about who's cuter and better: Peeta or Gale. It can get quite intense!) It's a level playing field when you talk to someone about a mutual love for a book. That makes it real to life instead of just something the curriculum requires. I love it!
Now, I've been roped into leading a Hunger Games Book Club at school. A bit of a challenge as all my participants are in varying parts of the series. Our first meeting is tomorrow. I have a cornucopia of ideas planned (literally). Should be fun.
Today, I booked tickets for Trevor and I to go to the movie. (It was supposed to be a surprise but I don't have a poker face and my husband can read me like a book.) Date night + a movie version of a book that has played a huge role in my 2012 so far = a very happy me!

Little Guy

"Simon, you're getting so big. Momma's going to have to buy you new pants (socks, shoes, jacket... the works)."
"Nemo is a little guy. Nemo is not a baby." (We watched "Finding Nemo" - it's changed our lives.)
My little baby boy is entering his last month as a 2 year old. These past few weeks, I've noticed HUGE changes in his behaviour. He's starting to make rational choices. He's learning to calm himself down to avoid consequences. He's starting to see and treat Claire like a person. He's constantly trying to please. He's telling jokes. He's becoming this delightful little being to have around the house. I think 3 will be good for us!
Claire, on the other hand, is getting her eye-teeth (all four poking away at her at once) and she's miserable. Poor thing!
I am soon going to have 6 1/2 months of bliss in my house without a 2-year old and then, Claire will transform into a crazy creature for a while.

March Madness
Prep house - done
Sell house - done
Mark like crazy - working on it
Report Cards - due at the end of the month (I've never done e-school report cards before...eeek!)
Prep kids' clothes for clothing sale - 6 tubs done/6 more to go (crazy how much work this is)
Sell clothes at sale - end of the month
Paint kids' rooms and closets at the Someday House - get a good chunk of it done tomorrow and maybe go back next weekend

An Open Door

3 days on the market.
3 offers.
We accepted one of the ones above asking price that had no conditions. We are so very thankful!
Looking forward to this summer in our new home!!!!
Sure a lot different then our last real estate experience. I guess that was God closing one door so that we could have a better opportunity. It makes more sense now on this end. It sure stung then.
It's official. We're moving at the end of May. Yippee for us!

For Sale

Thursday the sign went up.
Yesterday, we had 3 viewings. (Thanks Mom and Dad for supper).
Today, we had 4 viewings plus an Open House. (Thanks lovely in-laws for lunch and a nap place).
Tomorrow, we have a second Open House and we'll probably be booking viewings before we head off for church.
Hopefully, we'll have a sold sign by Monday.
The reality of our "Someday House" is sinking in.
(I've been sorting, purging, boxing and cleaning like a mad woman lately - yeesh!)

Blech

Sometimes, I feel like I've been sick forever. We have a constant nose drip and hacking cough going through our house. Last week was my week off. The babies and I laid low for most of it.
Today, I dropped the kids off with their sweet baby-sitter (they're quick at recovering compared to me) and now, I'm spending my morning on the couch. Coughing all over my students yesterday made me feel bad.
I'm tired of being sick.
How long until spring?

Princess
Today, me and my Mom took Claire to a Princess Tea at Mom's church. Elizabeth and Auntie Karri came too. It was really sweet. The room we were in was decorated in soft pinks and purples, there were flowers and butterflies and a fountain. It was so very pretty. Claire dressed up in a gorgeous dress I found at a used clothing sale. She also wore her favorite sparkly shoes. We dined on pink and white sandwiches, (butterfly shaped) cheese and crackers, butterfly cupcakes, sugar cookies and vanilla tarts.
It was delightful to see all these teeny-tiny girls dressed up and treated so well by adults who value them. It was an honour to sit with some very valuable women in my life.
I was reminded about how precious it is to be a woman. I was also reminded that the world doesn't value the sweet innocence that my daughter possesses. She's going to be bombarded by messages telling her she needs to be sexy, super skinny, pouty, beautiful as defined by fashion magazines and that she needs to do everything in her power to attract boys. This is going to happen much, much to soon. (I teach 11 and 12 year olds, so I see this every day.)
I need to, as her mother, affirm her beauty (inner and outer) and her worth. I want to protect her from the hurts the world is going to hurl her way, but I can't. Instead, I can build a foundation of love and trust with her. Then, I can pray for her and trust God to keep her for me.
Psalm 139:13-16
Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother's womb.
I thank you, High God—you're breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I'd even lived one day.

Hospitality (and a lot of parentheses for some reason)
When we were first married, Trevor and I opened up our house to guests regularly. Need a place to stay? A meal? A cup of tea? We were happy hosts.
When Simon was born, our house turned into a whirlwind of baby stuff, dirty dishes, quick to cook foods and one tired Momma. Obviously, Claire didn't really improve the situation (although, she totally makes our life awesome... as does Simon).
Needless to say, I lost my hospitable touch.
Claire is now 15 months. She eats really well (albeit messily). Simon does well too. My kids give me time in the afternoon (mostly) to clean and prepare. Even though I'm tired, I am sleeping through the night (bliss).
I am excited to host people again. We're trying to have more people over to our little home. It's a lot more work but, it's so much fun to prepare an array of good foods and teach our kids about being hosts.

On the Eve of Love
Tonight is the eve before Valentine's Day. I'm happily baking heart shaped sugar cookies. Simon and I coloured his valentines yesterday. I have a sweet surprise for my sweetie and we're going to attempt our fancy crab legs tradition with the kiddos. Should be fun!
Tonight (as I ice sugar cookies), I plan on watching the Bachelor. It's true, this trashy TV show is quite an addicting vice for me. I've already written a post a few years back about why I find endless amusement in the fact that those very, very beautiful people wearing gorgeous clothes, going on incredible dates and traveling to exotic locales are so unhappy. They are unhappy because they don't have what I have: a soul mate... someone to "do" life with. Therefore, as entertaining as it is for me, I am a little smug. My eye-rolling husband will be sitting nearby tolerating my addiction just as I tolerate every pro-sports season that plays across our TV screen. This, folks, is true love. :)
Tomorrow, we won't be wining and dining, dressed to the nines at a fancy restaurant. Instead, I will watch the man of my dreams play, snuggle and bathe our kids. Then, we'll probably snuggle up and watch nothing much on TV and daydream about our "Someday House". This, Ben and Bachelorettes of 2012, is how love looks in real life. It's pretty sweet!
Happy Valentine's Day, folks!

Smooth
When I started back to work, I was a little unsure about how to do lunch. I knew I had a 15 minute window when my classes would end, I would prep and clean up and be out the door to pick up the kids. I did not want to waste any of my precious time walking to the other side of the school (staff room) to toast a bagel or warm up soup (my usual go-to lunches). Also, I wanted something healthy and easy to take with me in the car.
No, I don't want to eat sandwiches... too many carbs and I ate too many when I was in school.
I decided to try flavoured canned tuna. There's plenty of good flavours and I would also bring some Triscuits along (as well as a yop-like yogurt drink). The tuna always tasted good and always filled me up. Unfortunately, every single time I opened up a tin, I felt like I was opening up cat food. Most days I managed to swallow my gag reflex but, it was hard to shake.
My brother, Tim, is in a similar boat. He travels between his two pt. time jobs (teaching and pastoring) at lunch. His solution to lunch is a smoothie. Yum!
Now, I drink a delightful blend of fruit, yogurt and milk every day. I add honey as a natural sweetener and a dash of cinnamon. The cinnamon is the best part. I actually crave it all morning until smoothy time.
Best work lunch ever!
Add a granola bar (nuts = protein) and an apple (honeycrisp, please) and I'm a happy girl!

Testing, Testing
I'm giving a test in Social this week. This is the first test I'm giving to my e. students so, I've been really careful to give them ample warning, a detailed study guide (also emailed to their parents) and an interactive Jeopardy Review.
I really don't like tests. Don't get me wrong, they're not hard for me. I can easily prep a test and easily mark a test. I'm just not sure if a test is an accurate snapshot of the learning going on in my classroom.
For instance, we did a series of interactive activities that taught us about how culture has influenced us as individuals. We also did an in-depth simulation where we played a trading game. In both those lessons, I feel as though students were thinking critically and creatively. They were also memorable learning moments.
A test is simply a regurgitation of information. I have a really good memory so I'm good at tests. Not all kids are. Is this regurgitation of information a skill that is necessary in a world where information is just a google search away? What if our Canadian schools went to an American model where some states attach funding to test scores? Where would my time for meaningful, memorable learning activities go?
I love projects where kids really have dig into the material, process it and make it their own. I love building concepts from definitions to creative application. I think this is where the meat and potatoes of education is.
Should I stop giving tests altogether? Then, what happens to my minions when they meet up with a teacher who believes rote learning and test-writing is the be-all and end-all to education?
What happens if we slowly slide to the American model and I have to start teaching to a test so that the government has results to validate spending?
You've probably had at least a little education; what do you think?

Snippets of Joy

I took them back to our favorite summer park 2 days in a row. It was so good to be back in our old stomping grounds. It was pretty neat to explore the park now that it was covered in snow. Simon climbed up the play structure and slid down all the slides like it was old hat. Claire, now a wee walker, was delighted to start exploring on her own. Some older kids had built a snow fort. This was the best thing ever. Claire discovered that she LOVES the teetor-totter and cried when she had to leave it.
This is why I work part time. I don't want to miss moments like these with my babies who are growing up so fast.

Clutter

It's that time of year again. The time of year when I feel the urge to de-clutter my home. Also, as our "Someday House" inches closer to completion, the reality of moving our entire household becomes more certain.
Today, I went through half of my teaching stuff. For you teachers out there, you know the importance and the hours of your life that has gone into the close to 100 binders filled full of developed classes. Today, I purged. I threw out my daybooks from my first years of teaching (eeekk) and I pitched ALL my university notes and memorable projects. I threw out documents related to a variety of extra-curr activities, staff meetings, provincial iniatives, etc. and I readied old university texts for Salvation Army.
I still have a collection of binders. With an uncertain future, who knows what I'll be teaching next? I'd rather not have to redo all my work if I can just store it. (Movers - beware of the crazy binder pile; it is precious!)
As I look around my house, I see it with different eyes. I think the next month or two will be a frenzy of pitching and purging. The recycling guys are going to wonder about our paper piles for the next little while.

Siblings
My kids started fighting when Claire was just 7 months. At first, we thought it was Simon bugging her but, soon we realized that it takes two to tango and that our little princess was pretty aggressive. (Once, when I took Simon shopping by himself, he told me that he was excited to have a cart to himself so that "Claire is not attacking Simon." - Yeesh!) We won't worry whether she can hold her own or not.
Our sweet pea is 14 1/2 months. She just started walking and she babbles up a storm. We're starting to have to discipline her when she throws her food on the floor or when she repeatedly attempts unsafe things (standing in the bath, making beelines towards stairs, etc). We're currently "fighting" about going to sleep without Momma holding her and I need to come up with a plan to wean her. Simon was pretty good about being weaned but, Claire's a little more feisty. She still nurses three times a day and I'd like to cut it back to just her morning nurse soon.
Simon tends to be a pretty compliant little man. He does however, get stubborn about the strangest things (no comments please, Mom). Claire tests and tests and tests to see where the boundaries are. I think she'll give us a bit more of a run for our money.

Stranded on the Side of a Road
Yesterday, on the way home from work (in -41 weather), one of my tire's went flat. I called a tow truck. He changed my tire. I drove on a dummy tire to get the kids. I realized that my back tire was also flat. We took the car to the shop. We now have 2 new tires. Blech! It sucked to stranded on the side of the road. It sucked to pay the bill. I was a little stressed out and it really didn't add to my already crappy week. However, that is done. Tomorrow is Friday and then, I get to kiss this week goodbye.
Today, I need to focus more on the good. Although we all have colds, none of us is really sick. We have two wonderful little people to snuggle. We have a wonderful, warm little house filled with all of our favorite things. We have a "Someday House" that is about to be painted and have flooring put in. We have a cuddly, cabin-fevered cat. We have an amazing babysitter who plays so well with our babies. We have great families who support us through everything. We have good jobs that we both like going to everyday. We have amazing friends. We have each other (and my husband gives the best hugs).
Sometimes, life gets me down. I think this is normal for all of us. I think the most important thing is that we only get one trip around the sun so, wallowing in what gets us down doesn't get us anywhere. Therefore, I apologize for my whining. Life is not all "happy, happy" all the time however, my problems are pretty small in the grand scheme of things.
Wishing you all a fabulous Friday - I'm sure glad to see a weekend around the corner!
(Fun news - Claire used the potty; she's loves that thing! If she keeps it up, she'll be potty trained before her brother. Claire also spent all evening walking around unassisted and without going back and forth between furniture... just walking. More things to be grateful for!)

Surly
I just feel like a big ball of surliness today. Maybe it's the lack of sleep last night (thanks to Claire who is either teething really poorly or has an ear infection... tba Dr's appt tomorrow). Maybe it's the deep freeze that my prairies has found itself in. Maybe it's grief over an accident that is leaving my high school community stunned and sad. Maybe it's that I'm tired of making meals for kids who don't eat them and then cleaning up gunk. Maybe it was the scary accident I saw on my commute to work that left me scared and in tears. Maybe solving Middle Years problems daily is getting to me. Maybe it's been the series of interminable inside recesses that don't really give me a break from my students. Maybe it's the Boiled Water alert that my school had today that just added to the "drama" of grade 6/7. Maybe it's my baby girl who won't sleep alone for more then a 1/2 hour in the afternoons giving me time to do not much housework or schoolwork.
Blech.
Maybe I just need a good night's sleep and some time counting my many, many blessings.
Thanks for letting me vent.
(Update - we took her to a mediclinic; no ear infection. Just a sad, teething girl with a bad cold... blech!)

A Matter of Space

We have the kind of basement that would cause nightmares for small children. There are spider webs, a noisy furnace, and light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. As an adult, I think it's pretty handy. It's a clean, somewhat organized storage area. That's close to 1100 square feet of storage. My Dad made these nifty storage shelves that are awesome and hold a lot of totes. I've been storing A LOT of stuff. There's the stuff that we got for our wedding that I'm still not so sure about but, couldn't regift and couldn't figure out where to return it. There's the regular stuff that a person stores. There's a collection of childhood stuff that both Trevor and I have. There's our seasonal clothes and my fancy dresses. There are at least 11 totes of kids' clothes/shoes/jackets/Halloween costumes. I don't even want to talk about the entire section of our basement dedicated to the plethora of paper, books and precious binders that is my teaching stuff. Lastly, there is this pile of baby gear.
With our upcoming move, I've decided we need to downsize. I don't need to invest time or money hauling unused stuff from one basement to another.
I'm selling the baby gear.
Gulp.
No more babies?
Maybe two is just right for us.
I'm also throwing out the boxes marked "internship". I haven't opened them since my first year of teaching and that was 10 years ago.
I'm also taking some large trips to our local Salvation Army.
I refuse to move some of this stuff. I need to see it go. I have 5 replies already to my ads on the local used stuff website.
It's a matter of space.

Wretched

Last night, I spent most of my sleep time battling nausea and some pretty uncomfortable moments of being much too hot and then much too cold. Today, I could barely get out of bed I felt so yucky.
Today, I am thankful for a patient hubby who so lovingly looked after our minions. I am thankful for my in-laws who are having my sweet kids over for play time and lunch. I am thankful that this is probably only a 24 hour thing and that I should be back to normal (whatever that is) soon.
This is our 3rd bout of the stomach flu this year. We've been more sick in the past three months then the past three years. Maybe, our world needs to get colder to keep those pesky germs at bay.
On a funny note, Simon's been obsessed with his "microbes" collection. It started when his Aunt and Uncle bought him a stuffed brain cell. We returned from our Noon Year's at the Science Centre with The Common Cold stuffed toy for Simon and The Measles stuffed toy for Claire. Simon has pictures of all of them and plays microbes all the time. Thus, it was easy to explain to him that Momma has The Stomach Flu microbe (that creepy green guy to the left). Maybe microbiology will be his thing?

Part Time Momma
Let's face it folks, 100% Mommying isn't quite my bag of tea. At first, I was a little disappointed in myself... shouldn't I want to be with my kids all the time, planning playdates, playing outside, going on little adventures, teaching them things big and small? I LOVE doing all those things. What I don't love is day after day after day of yucky food, cleaning only to re-clean, crying, clinging, fighting and these 4 walls closing in around me. I have realized that I need to leave the house and do something productive that I'm passionate about. I love my job. However, 100% teaching isn't for me right now either. As much as I love the students, building relationships, gossiping with staff and facilitating memorable learning experiences, I can't handle prepping for 10 periods (with little prep built in), extra curr and all that marking. I don't want to be playing with my kids while wielding a red pen.
Therefore, I'm a giving 100% to my half-time life. There's less pay cheque (and yet more then mat leave) but, it is more rewarding. I get to have a little of everything except maybe a sit down lunch.
Kudos to you stay at home Mommas - I think you're brave, brave ladies. Kudos to you full-time working Mommas - don't burn yourselves out. For those of you who have found this part time, sweet spot - enjoy!

Reality Looming

Tomorrow is my final day of holidays. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my job. My students are pretty awesome, I love being up in front teaching or walking from desk to desk encouraging my sillies and I love building into kids lives. What I don't like is the tedious marking. Even less... the endless, endless prep. (I'm ruing the transfer that left me in a spot where I spend a lot of time just figuring out the curriculum). I chose not to give my kids homework as long as they read at least 15 minutes a day (because homework is cruel over the holidays). However, I have a pile of homework that I have to do. Blech! I want my magic prep/marking fairy to show up soon. Wish me luck as I continue to procrastinate.
Happy back to school to all you parents!

2012 - Goals
After some reflection on last year's goals, I have decided that it was a worthy activity for me. No lofty resolutions. No pressure to totally change. Just a few simple things to work towards.
1. Pack, purge, re-organize. The "Big Move" will help with this. It's maintenance I'm looking for!
2. Continue cloth diapering the babies and potty train the Schmoo. It's Battle of the Wills time. (If I'm really lucky, Claire will just follow suit!)
3. Crock pot cook more. It's so sweet to come home to a yummy supper!
4. Be more social. Sigh - I'm such a homebody. I need to go out with my staff at least once before June. I need to see my girlfriends without any of our kids. I need to choose to leave the comfort of my couch in the evening.
5. Get out with just Trevor more. I'm hoping that with slightly older kids, we may feel more comfortable leaving them with teenage baby-sitters. Aiming for some cool concerts!
6. Find as many free (or nearly free) local "adventures" to do with the kids.
7. Continue sewing little projects. I have an advent project in mind for next Christmas. It's my goal to get it done.
8. Resist the urge to buy more and more and more. (One thing I worry about with our new home is that we'll want to buy new everything when, we really don't need to. I'd like to wait a little while before we add to our new space.)
9. Pre-school for Simon. The area we're moving to has a fabulous pre-school that I'm super excited about. I also want to supplement that with some of my own teaching.
10. Be purposeful in inviting people to my home. I often panic about a messy house, not the right snacks or unruly kids. I need to stop being Martha and be more of a Mary!
I'm curious to see how 2012 will shape our lives.

2011 - Goals Reflection
I set a pile of goals for myself in January of 2011. Now, I need to assess what I've done.
These were my 2011 goals:
1. Lose baby weight sensibly.
-Well, I'm not as heavy as I was last January. I have been able to go down a few pants sizes. However, there's more work to be done. Hopefully, when Claire is weaned, I will be back to my happy medium
2. Eat more vegetables.
-I think we did this. I tried hard to say "yes" to the side salad and "no" to the fries... didn't always work out.
3. Vacuum more.
-It helped that we bought a snazzy new vacuum last Boxing Day so, this was easy!
4. Cloth diapers both kiddies and potty-train the Schmoo.
-Both kids are in cloth diapers most days. They get disposables at the sitter's. Simon wears underwear 40% of his life. He'd be potty-trained if we operated on my will-power alone. Unfortunately, I have a head-strong toddler who'll figure it out eventually. (I have a feeling Claire will be trained soon after Simon so, this may be my last year of diapers... fingers crossed.)
5. Nap every so often - because I can.
-And I do! Yesterday, I had a good solid afternoon nap. This should be everyone's goal! :)
6. Find another cool concert to go to with my honey.
-Can't say we did this unless the free concert in the park on Canada Day counts. I need to try again on this one!
7. Recycle more... buy less.
-Still working on this. It's hard to back out of consumerism in a consumerist society but, we are trying.
8. Create practical items and gifts to reuse.
-Did this! My gift bags rocked! I loved making capes for the kids. The owls for Claire's B-day favours were a hit. I have a few plans for 2012... as long as I get some time to sew!
9. Have more family dance parties.
-This was pretty easy. Both kids have some pretty stellar baby moves. I don't want to talk about their parents.
10. Take the family on more travel adventures.
-Ottawa was awesome. It was a big risk and it paid off! Our Clear Lake/Winnipeg trip was pretty awesome too. I can't see us getting too far in 2012 but, we'll venture somewhere this coming summer.
